Main Street Morgantown celebrates the city’s historic preservation year-round, and thanks to the remarkable buildings that line our streets, it’s something residents and visitors alike get to enjoy every day.
From the brickwork and charm of the city’s architecture to the stories embedded in each storefront and facade, Morgantown’s downtown is anything but generic. These aren’t just buildings—they’re pieces of our collective memory.
One of the most iconic is the Hotel Morgan, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary later this year. As part of that milestone, the hotel is unveiling a major renovation: the grand reopening of its top-floor ballroom.
Perched above High Street with panoramic views of the city, the ballroom offers glimpses of the river, the university, and the waterfront. It’s a space designed to awe—and a reminder that they don’t build hotels like this anymore.
Preservation brings character—and quality
There’s nothing cookie-cutter about Hotel Morgan. And that’s exactly the point.
Preserving spaces like these is about more than nostalgia. It’s about honoring craftsmanship, protecting cultural landmarks, and maintaining the unique character that makes Morgantown stand out.
“We’re not a community of generic buildings,” said Erik Carlson, Vice President of the Morgantown Area Partnership. “We are a community of historic buildings—and breathing life into those spaces is so much better than replacing them with something less meaningful.”
Why place still matters
At its core, preservation is a reminder that where we are matters. Downtown Morgantown matters. When we protect the places that tell our stories, we make space for new stories to be written—for future memories to be made.
So whether you’re looking out over the skyline from the Hotel Morgan’s ballroom, grabbing coffee in a century-old storefront, or walking the same brick streets as generations before you, you’re part of something bigger.
That’s the power of place—and the promise of preservation.
