Zeke’s Breakfast & Bakes — 240 Walnut Street

Together, Apothecary Ale House & Cafe, Blue Moose Coffeehouse and Zeke’s Breakfast & Bakes form a dynamic collection of locally owned businesses, all owned and operated by the same entrepreneur, helping define the daily experience of Downtown Morgantown. From early morning coffee to late-night gatherings, these establishments create a full-day rhythm that reflects the energy, dedication and sense of community that make downtown a destination.

Apothecary Ale House & Cafe, located on Spruce Street, has been a cornerstone of Morgantown’s social scene since 2012. Known for offering one of the largest craft beer selections in West Virginia, the space features 30 constantly rotating taps and more than 140 bottled options. Housed in a 1920s building, the venue features a stunning beer garden. The atmosphere is laid-back and inviting, with a warm, intimate layout to encourage conversation and connection. In addition to its extensive drink offerings, Apothecary serves a menu of bar bites, salads, wood-fired sandwiches, artisan flatbreads and desserts. It promotes community with recurring events that bring people together and keep the space active throughout the week.

Just a short walk away on Walnut Street, Blue Moose Coffeehouse has long served as one of Morgantown’s most recognizable and beloved gathering spaces. A local landmark for more than 20 years, the coffeehouse blends a classic cafe experience with a strong cultural presence. Guests can enjoy specialty coffee, tea and house-baked goods in a space that regularly hosts live music, open mics, art exhibits and readings. The addition of beer, cider and wine further expands its appeal, making it a place that transitions from daytime productivity to evening relaxation.

Zeke’s Breakfast & Bakes, also located on Walnut Street beside Blue Moose, brings an energetic and approachable breakfast and lunch concept to Downtown. Since opening in 2020, the eatery has built a loyal following with its commitment to fresh, made-from-scratch food. The menu features house-made bagels, biscuits, waffles, breakfast tacos and a rotating selection of baked goods prepared daily. With a focus on quality and simplicity, along with options to accommodate a range of dietary preferences including vegan offerings, Zeke’s has become a go-to spot for both quick stops and relaxed morning gatherings.

All three businesses operate under the ownership of local entrepreneur Grace Hutchens, whose approach emphasizes consistency, community and creating spaces where people feel welcome to gather and return. Long ago, Grace got her start in food service as a barista of Blue Moose. Today, she carries on its legacy. Along with her family, Grace’s impact on Downtown Morgantown has been recognized by the Morgantown Area Partnership, naming her the Small Business of the Year in 2025.

While each business offers a distinct experience, they are connected through a shared commitment to quality, consistency and community. Together, they represent a model of how locally owned businesses can complement one another, creating spaces that serve different needs while contributing to a cohesive downtown environment. Whether starting the day with coffee, meeting friends over lunch, or winding down with a craft beer, these businesses offer a seamless and welcoming experience that keeps Downtown Morgantown active, rooted and thriving.

Appalachian Gallery — 270 Walnut Street

Nestled in the heart of Morgantown, Appalachian Gallery is a cornerstone to Morgantown’s creative identity as one of the leading commercial art galleries in Monongalia County. Offering a thoughtfully curated and eclectic collection of handmade goods, fine art and artisan crafts, the gallery celebrates the spirit, heritage and evolving creativity of West Virginia.

Founded in the 1980s by mystery author David A. Stelzig, Appalachian Gallery has been dedicated to showcasing and promoting work by West Virginia artists. Since 2004, under the leadership of Penelyn Van Orange and the late Laurie Nugent, the gallery expanded its offerings and reputation, growing into a destination known for both artistic excellence and deep community roots. Today, as sole owner and operator, Penelyn continues that mission by elevating local artists and introducing visitors to the diverse techniques and expressions of creatives across the Mountain State.

Inside the gallery, visitors will find an ever-changing collection that reflects the character of Appalachia. The gallery features drawn and painted works, bold stained-glass creations, vintage glass and handblown pieces from renowned makers like Blenko and Ron Hinkle Glass. These are complemented by handcrafted jewelry, stoneware pottery, wooden bowls, ironwork and a wide range of Appalachian-inspired gifts and printed works. The stained-glass artistry of Penelyn Van Orange, along with her finely framed prints and cards, has become a defining hallmark of the gallery experience.

Located in the distinctive 1902 “Sandcastle” building on Walnut Street since 2011, Appalachian Gallery offers more than just retail. The building itself enhances the experience, with hand-carved oak details and stained-glass architectural elements that create a warm setting across two spacious floors.

In addition to its retail offerings, Appalachian Gallery provides professional custom framing services, helping customers preserve artwork, memorabilia and personal achievements with precision and care. This service reinforces the gallery’s commitment not only to selling art, but to honoring it.

The gallery’s success has been shaped by an engaged, art-loving community and long-standing relationships with regional artists, including names like Frank Ceravalo, Jeff Greenham, T. Anne Hawkins, Tom Milne, Robert Riffe and Steve Pavlovic. Even through challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Appalachian Gallery remained a consistent presence in Downtown Morgantown, reflecting resilience and dedication to both artists and customers. The legacy of co-owner Laurie Nugent, honored by the community after her passing in 2022, continues to be an integral part of the gallery’s identity.

Today, Appalachian Gallery is more than a store. It is a cultural anchor that strengthens Downtown Morgantown’s identity as a place where creativity thrives, local businesses grow and authentic experiences are prioritized.

Hoot & Howl — 245 Walnut Street

The business traces its roots back to 2008 when it began as The Crimson Owl in Virginia. After relocating to Morgantown and rebranding in 2012, owner Stephanie Swaim began by creating and sourcing goods that were sold locally through small businesses like Mountain People’s Co-op and Eloquence Antiques & Artisans. In 2018, after years of development and dedication, the Hoot & Howl storefront on Walnut Street officially opened, transforming the space into a welcoming gift shop full of products from West Virginia makers. In 2023, the business expanded into the adjacent storefront with the addition of Euphorbia, a plant shop by Hoot & Howl.

Euphorbia allows for more artisans to be showcased while offering a curated selection of houseplants along with in-house services such as repotting and drainage drilling. Providing both convenience and expertise for customers, the offering reinforces the shop’s hands-on and service-oriented approach, extending its role beyond retail into education and care.

Over the years, Hoot & Howl has earned significant recognition for its impact and quality. The shop has repeatedly been named “Best Gift Shop in Morgantown” and “Best Place to Buy West Virginia-Made Products” by Morgantown Magazine, along with multiple “Best Place to Shop in Mountaineer Country” honors from WV Living Magazine and recognition as one of the South’s Best Boutiques by Southern Living. In 2026, it was also named 4th Friendliest Small Gift Shop by Advance Funds Network.

Beyond its retail offerings, Hoot & Howl actively fosters collaboration and creativity by welcoming artisans, hosting events and pop-up opportunities for makers and small businesses. By elevating other entrepreneurs, Hoot & Howl helps strengthen the broader creative economy in Downtown Morgantown. Whether you are searching for a one-of-a-kind gift, discovering new artists or simply exploring Downtown Morgantown, Hoot & Howl offers an experience that is creative, community-driven and always evolving, rooted in a deep appreciation for local makers and craftsmanship.

Tanner’s Alley Leather Design Studio — 416 High Street

For nearly 50 years, Tanner’s Alley Leather Design Studio is a defining example of craftsmanship, longevity and locally rooted entrepreneurship in Downtown Morgantown. Since 1976, the studio has built a reputation for producing premium leather goods that are not only made in the United States, but designed and handcrafted on-site with a level of care and precision that is increasingly rare.

In 1973, founder Charles “Charlie” McEwuen, serving in the 101st Airborne Division, taught himself leatherworking using limited materials from a post craft store. What started as a personal skill quickly evolved into a lifelong craft. When Charlie returned to Morgantown in 1976, he transformed that skill into a business, opening Tanner’s Alley in a six-foot-wide storefront carved out of what was once a narrow alleyway on Walnut Street here in Downtown Morgantown. From those humble beginnings, the business has grown into a well-respected destination for high-quality leather goods, while never losing its commitment to hands-on production and local roots.

For nearly five decades, Tanner’s Alley has been dedicated to the belief that premium style and durability are best achieved through artisan craftsmanship. Every product is designed and produced in-house, ensuring consistency, quality and authenticity. The studio offers a wide range of leather goods, including handbags, briefcases, luggage, boots, shoes and accessories, all made with meticulous attention to detail and built to last.

Beyond retail, Tanner’s Alley provides expert leather repair services, extending the life of well-loved items and reinforcing the value of investing in quality materials. This full-service approach reflects a deeper philosophy centered on sustainability, craftsmanship and long-term use rather than fast consumption.

As the business grew, Charlie expanded his team with skilled artisans who share his commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Together, they have helped elevate Tanner’s Alley from a local shop to a recognized name beyond Morgantown, while still maintaining its identity as a community-centered business.

Located on High Street, Tanner’s Alley continues to serve as both a retail destination and a working studio where visitors can experience the process behind the products. Charlie McEwuen’s dedication has earned significant recognition, including honors as a West Virginia Business of the Year and the 2024 Morgantown Area Partnership Veteran Owned Business of the Year Award. In addition to his work in the studio, he remains actively involved in the community as a board member of Main Street Morgantown, further contributing to the vitality and success of Downtown. His personal passions, including maintaining a collection of antique military vehicles, reflect the same appreciation for history, durability and craftsmanship that defines his work. Tanner’s Alley exemplifies the type of business that strengthens Downtown Morgantown’s identity. It supports a culture of craftsmanship, sustains local production and demonstrates how small, independent businesses can thrive through quality, consistency and community connection. Whether you are investing in a handcrafted leather piece, restoring a valued item or simply exploring Downtown Morgantown, Tanner’s Alley Leather Design Studio offers an experience rooted in tradition, skill and enduring quality.
