New jet service allows for direct flights between Morgantown to Chicago

The Morgantown Area Partnership

Morgantown Municipal Airport recently landed a deal with SkyWest Airlines, adding direct flights to Chicago alongside the existing route to Washington, D.C. SkyWest operates as United Express, so while the flights are flown by SkyWest, they’re booked and branded through United. Now, Morgantown travelers can get all the perks of flying with a major airline—like earning miles and easy connections to anywhere in the world—on a smaller jet.

The Department of Transportation awarded these 50-seat jet aircraft services because they recognized what many in Morgantown already knew: this region is home to a major university, a growing business community, and a population that relies on accessible and dependable travel options.

Jets have advantages over smaller planes. For example, jets are able to fly above storms, making the service more reliable. Jets can fly longer distances, opening up additional route options. And yes, they have onboard restrooms—a comfort smaller planes often skip.

The addition of service to O’Hare International Airport in Chicago in addition to Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. means that travelers from Morgantown now have one-stop access to destinations around the globe.

According to Visit Mountaineer Country CVB, the response so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Flights to Chicago are outpacing Dulles two-to-one, and the feedback from passengers highlights the convenience, efficiency, and simplicity of flying out of Morgantown. From free airport parking to fast, stress-free boarding, the experience is a major draw.

“If we continue the pace at which this airline has been utilized so far, we’ll blow our enplanement numbers out of the water,” said Susan Riddle, President and CEO of Visit Mountaineer Country CVB.

Groups like Mountaineer Country CVB and the Morgantown Area Partnership have worked closely with the city and airport to seal the deal on this service. Between Riddle’s advertisement of the service and the Partnership’s guidance, local leaders are working together to advocate for these economic opportunities.

Every ticket booked at Morgantown Municipal Airport helps build the momentum needed to grow service—and with it, new opportunities for the region.
